CANopen – a tried-and-tested standard

CANopen is the standard for safely networking complex devices and systems. It has been in use for decades in Europe and is growing in popularity in North America and Asia.

CANopen features in a whole range of different application areas. Alongside automation technology, these include applications in energy generation, the shipping industry, mobile vehicles such as telescopic and other forklifts, construction and agricultural machinery and medical devices.

These application areas require a high degree of safety and speed. Rotary encoders need to deliver impressive performance in terms of accuracy and linearity, resolution and repeatability, seal and dimensions – and also convince in financial terms.

New benchmark for angle measurement in CANopen environment

The non-contacting Vert-X 32E rotary encoder offers performance features that have not previously been imaginable in this economically priced segment. These include a 360° angle range, guaranteed linearity of ±0.3%, 16 bit resolution and a low temperature coefficient of <25 ppm/K.

This encoder also impresses across the board when it comes to mechanical specifications. 
With a height of just 10 mm and mounting hole intervals of 38 mm, the Vert-X 32E is very compact. Thanks to the metal-reinforced mounting tabs and the robust cable connection, it is immune to high tractive forces. The specified protection rating (IP68) and an operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C allow it to be used in challenging environments.

The Vert-X 32E rotary encoder can be combined with numerous options. Versions with both spur connection and with looped-through CAN bus are available.

CANopen rotary encoder in redundant versions

The fully redundant versions with two independent, electrically isolated measuring systems deserve particular mention. For applications that require maximum safety, a 2-bus system is available, where both the power supply and the signaling of the two measuring systems are separately connected to two independent CAN buses.

As an alternative, the encoder is available in a redundant version, where the signals and power supply are fed via one bus only. In this 1-bus system, both measuring systems have the same power supply and the two independent signals within the encoder are connected via the same CAN bus. This reduces the number of wires required.

Custom options

Other options not only include individually set baud rates and node numbers but also integrated CAN terminating resistors, custom cable lengths and special magnetic actuators for applications with extended tolerances and operating distances (z) between magnetic actuator and sensor unit.
