Rotary encoder for ultra heavy-duty applications

Waste disposal vehicles and industrial waste compactors have to empty tonnes of waste with high efficiency and compact waste to minimal dimensions – heavy-duty work.

They depend on the exact measurement and control of the angular positions of lifting and compacting equipment. The encoders have to withstand tremendous radial and axial shaft loads and energy surges or high voltage spikes in the on-board network (load dump).

The encoders are also exposed to extremely harsh conditions, typically water, salt and sand, as well as aggressive substances or corrosive liquids leaking from the waste itself.

Vert-X 88 – robust and durable

Contelec’s Vert-X 88 rotary encoder is perfect for ultra heavy-duty applications such as waste disposal vehicles, construction machinery, forestry machinery or agricultural applications.

The sensor is based on the established, contactless MH-C and MH-C2 technologies. With its exterior diameter of 88 mm, IP68/IP69K protection rating and rugged architecture, this rotary encoder sets a clear benchmark.

Vert-X 88 is specified for shaft loads of up to 300 N axial and 400 N radial, supports a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C (without any compromises in accuracy or linearity) and boasts a lifespan of at least 360 million movements.

Redundant versions for the greatest possible safety

Developed according to the principles of functional safety, even the basic version of the Vert-X 88 offers a high degree of safety. The encoder is optionally available with semi or full redundancy, making it ideal for use in safety-relevant application areas.

Variety of interfaces

Vert-X 88 is available with different interfaces and custom cable connections. Analog 5 and 24 volt interfaces are supported, along with a CANopen variant.

Programmable sensor

In the MH-C2 variant, the 12 to 16 bit resolution encoder, specified with linearity of up to ±0.1% of the measuring range, also offers specific programming and setting possibilities. For example, the direction of rotation (CW, CCW), index point (zero point or midpoint) and start/end point can be set or programmed individually on site when installed.
